Making in School

Cohort Members

PS 191 The Riverside School for Makers & Artists has undergone a great deal of change this school year. Moving to a new location, RSMA has focused on incorporating Making not just into it's name, but into the daily work of all students.

Why did you choose a career in education?

I love teaching and seeing those "aha" moments/experiences by my students. I enjoy sharing my love for Science and exploring different phenomena with my students. I want to encourage students that any of their dreams are possible with the right skills and knowledge.

What hobbies or other interests have your brought to your classroom?

I love art and cooking. I sculpt at the Art Students' League of New York. As much as possible, I encourage my students to be as creative as possible.

How do you plan on bringing Making to your students this year?

In our Science class, we will be constantly Making , designing, creating, modifying designs, and building models of different scientific phenomena. We will continue to build many projects related to the units that we are studying. As well, my students will be coding and creating 3D designs. Students will be taught that they are Makers and that they have creative intellect in all subjects, including Science.

Why did you choose a career in education?

...to improve society through our youth's education.

What hobbies or other interests have your brought to your classroom?

I love art and theater.

How do you plan on bringing Making to your students this year?

I've taught the Sol Lewitt project in Linear functions with 8th grade math students, and Stop Motion movies for transformational geometry. I'm hoping to add some cooking/baking or knitting to the curriculum.

Making Space

RSMA's new space includes a large library on the ground floor and a seperate classroom dedicated to Making. Educators' rooms also feature Making in their everyday lessons.

Making Experiences

Previously known as The Museum School, RSMA has incorporated Making and project-based learning to showcase deeper levels of learning on topics from ecology to history to biology and beyond. The PTA advocated for a Maker Space in the older building and it was through this success that the focus shifted to incorporate a Maker Space in the new building.

  • With the new name of the school featuring Makers the MFSC Maker Educator Cohort features not only the three educators above, but will be supporting librarian Antiqua Lewis.

  • Raji and Lisa will be incorporating Making into their science units to give students the opportunity to display content knowledge in a creative way.

  • The after-school Maker Space will be a more open-ended exploration into the creative design process. However, Raji and Lisa are planning on developing a social awareness angle to the projects students will create.
